What Testing a 60 Percent Keyboard Requires

The 60% layout compresses the entire keyboard onto layers, which changes what a diagnostic should look for. Because arrow keys, F-keys and the nav cluster are all reached through the Fn layer, a failing Fn key is far more disruptive than on a full board — it hides half the layout behind a single switch. The right side of a 60% is also where the least-used keys (Fn, menu) live, so worn-out boards often show chatter on the left-hand home row rather than the rarely-touched mods. When testing a 60%, press the layer keys themselves (Fn and the layer-shift keys) repeatedly, not just the alpha block, since layer shifts are what make or break this layout in daily use.

What is keyboard ghosting?

Keyboard ghosting occurs when pressing certain key combinations causes an unpressed key to falsely register, or prevents an active keypress from being detected due to shared wiring channels in low-cost key matrices.

What is N-Key Rollover (NKRO)?

N-Key Rollover (NKRO) means every key on your keyboard is wired independently. You can press as many keys simultaneously as you want, and every single keypress will register accurately with zero ghosting or dropped inputs.

How do I test for mechanical switch chatter or double-typing?

Switch chatter occurs when a mechanical switch contact bounces rapidly on press, registering two or more keypresses instantly. What is the difference between 60%, TKL 80%, and Full 100% layouts?
