Reliability Baselines Report — August 2026
This report summarizes the current reliability baseline for game controllers: average stick drift magnitude after 12 months of use, circularity error, and average lifespan before drift onset. All figures are modeled reference baselines — dated engineering estimates, not a measured dataset.
Community telemetry starts at 0 and progressively replaces these estimates with real, consenting measurements. Individual units vary; use these figures to compare models, not to predict your specific controller.

Key findings — August 2026
- Hall-effect sensors dominate drift resistance. The hall-effect reference model shows 0.1% average drift after 12 months versus 3.1–5.2% for potentiometer-based models — a 30–50× gap, and an average lifespan before drift onset of 36 months versus 9–14.
- Xbox Wireless is the most drift-prone tracked model at 5.2% average drift after 12 months, followed by DualSense at 4.8%.
- Circularity error tracks sensor type, not brand. Hall-effect models average 4.2% error vs 6.8–8.4% for potentiometer models.
- We still cannot publish figures for DualSense Edge, SCUF, Razer, or 8BitDo-specific models — our dataset has no baseline for them yet, and we will not invent numbers.
About these baselines
Figures are modeled reference estimates published with our testing methodology. They become real measurements as consenting testers contribute anonymous samples through the Stick Drift Detector and Circularity Test.
