The two mechanisms
Potentiometer sticks use a wiper that slides across a carbon track; the voltage at the wiper position becomes the coordinate. Every movement physically wears the wiper and track, and carbon dust shifts readings — the classic drift mechanism.
Hall-effect sticks measure a magnetic field with no physical contact. Nothing rubs, so there is no wear debris and no wiper fatigue. The sensor itself is the drift-resistant part; factory calibration and magnet centering are the only drift-adjacent risks.

Across our modeled reference baselines, Hall-effect sticks average 0.1% drift after 12 months versus 3.1–5.2% for potentiometer sticks — and a 36-month average lifespan before drift onset versus 9–14 months. That is a 30–50× modeled difference on the same test, which is why Hall-effect sticks are the recommended fix path for worn controllers.
