Hardware Grade Threshold Scale

85–100 · Grade A / A+ Tournament Grade Condition

Negligible stick drift (<2.5%), smooth circularity, full trigger range, and stable polling rate. Verified ready for competitive esports play.

70–84 · Grade B Standard Playable Condition

Moderate potentiometer aging or minor switch chatter. Fully usable for casual gaming with standard 5%–8% in-game deadzones.

< 70 · Grade C / F Hardware Attention Required

Severe stick drift (>8%), unresponsive trigger travel, or dead button switches. Requires cleaning, component repair, or RMA return.

How to Get Started

Just three steps to run a complete controller test and understand your controller's health status.

01

Connect Controller

Connect your controller to your computer via USB cable or Bluetooth. If the browser doesn't respond, press any button on the controller to activate the connection.

02

Button Detection

Press each button in the visual interface and confirm the corresponding area lights up on screen. This helps troubleshoot unresponsive or double-clicking buttons.

03

Sticks & Vibration

Rotate the sticks to check linearity and drift issues; click the vibration test button to feel if the left and right motor feedback is working properly.

Why You Need a Quantitative Controller Health Score

Gamepad wear is progressive and multi-dimensional. While catastrophic failure (such as a completely unresponsive bumper) is immediately obvious, subtle degradation—including potentiometer track carbon erosion, return spring tension loss, and conductive silicone dome softening—develops quietly over hundreds of gaming hours.

A simple "button test" only confirms whether an electrical contact closes. The Controller Health Score™ delivers a comprehensive 0–100 benchmark evaluating the mechanical health of your entire gamepad architecture.

The 6 Weighted Telemetry Sub-Systems

  • 1. Analog Stick Drift (30% Weight): Measures resting coordinate displacement from absolute true zero (0.0000, 0.0000) on both sticks. Lower resting variance produces a higher grade.
  • 2. Stick Circularity & Range (20% Weight): Evaluates outer perimeter reach and cardinal axis corner distortion to ensure full 1.0 magnitude vector travel across 360 degrees.
  • 3. Button Matrix & Switch Actuation (15% Weight): Tests face buttons (A/B/X/Y, Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle), shoulder bumpers (L1/R1, LB/RB), and D-pad diagonals for contact reliability and switch bounce.
  • 4. Analog Trigger Linearity (15% Weight): Evaluates analog L2/R2 (LT/RT) trigger hall/potentiometer sensors to ensure a smooth, continuous 0.00 to 1.00 pressure curve without dead zones.
  • 5. Report Frequency & Latency (10% Weight): Measures Gamepad API polling stability and report interval consistency in Hertz.
  • 6. Haptic Vibration & Motor Integrity (10% Weight): Tests dual eccentric rotating mass (ERM) or linear resonant actuator (LRA) haptic rumble motors across variable frequency pulses.

Using the Controller Condition Report for Secondhand Buying & Selling

Whether you are selling a used controller on eBay, Mercari, Swappa, or Reddit (r/hardwareswap), or verifying a newly purchased secondhand gamepad:

  1. Complete the Full Diagnostic Run: Cycle through sticks, buttons, and triggers to populate every benchmark channel.
  2. Export the Condition Snapshot: Click "Print / Export PDF Certificate" to generate an official verified test report card featuring the hardware UUID, client environment, and sub-system grades.
  3. Attach Proof to Listings: Provide buyers with objective, third-party diagnostic evidence proving zero stick drift and verified button responsiveness.

Measurement Boundaries & Testing Best Practices

To ensure the most accurate Health Score reading:

  • Use a Direct Wired Connection: USB connections provide stable polling rates without wireless Bluetooth packet compression or interference.
  • Disable Background Remappers: Software such as Steam Input, DS4Windows, or reWASD can inject artificial deadzones or emulate virtual Xbox 360 drivers, masking true hardware sensor readings.
  • Allow Return-to-Center Settling: Flick each analog stick firmly in several directions and allow it to settle naturally without touching the thumbstick before recording the final score.

Controller Hardware Glossary & Tips

Stick Drift & Deadzones

Stick drift occurs when analog sticks register input without being touched. This is typically caused by physical wear in traditional carbon-film potentiometers. A deadzone is a software-level threshold (e.g., 5-10%) applied to ignore these microscopic false inputs.

Hall Effect Sensors

Unlike traditional ALPS potentiometers, Hall Effect modules use magnetic fields to measure stick position. Because there is no physical contact or friction between the internal components, they are virtually immune to wear-induced stick drift, drastically extending the controller's lifespan.

Polling Rate (Hz) & Input Latency

Polling rate is how often your controller sends data to your device, measured in Hertz (Hz). A standard Bluetooth connection yields around 125Hz (8ms latency). Overclocking or using a wired USB connection can push this to 500Hz-1000Hz (1ms-2ms latency), critical for competitive gaming.

Circularity Error

When you rotate a joystick along its outer edge, a perfect module should trace a mathematically perfect circle. Circularity error measures the deviation from this perfect circle. High deviations (>15%) can result in uneven diagonal movement speeds in FPS games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about testing your controller.

How is the Controller Health Score™ calculated?

The score is computed using a weighted 6-factor hardware formula: Analog Stick Drift (30%), Outer Perimeter Circularity Error (20%), Button Matrix Actuation & Ghosting (15%), Analog Trigger Linearity (15%), Polling Rate Frequency (10%), and Haptic Rumble Motor Response (10%).

Can I use this report as proof of condition when selling a controller?

Yes. The Controller Health Score generates a tamper-evident Controller Condition Report with an immutable test UUID, client OS and browser environment metadata, component-by-component sub-grades, and exact timestamps suitable for eBay, Mercari, Swappa, or Reddit listings.

What is considered a passing Controller Health Score?

A score of 85–100 (Grade A/A+) represents tournament-grade mechanical integrity with negligible drift (<2%) and full axis circularity. Scores from 70–84 (Grade B) indicate standard playable condition with minor wear, while scores below 70 (Grade C/F) warrant hardware repair or deadzone compensation.

Does generating a Health Score store my personal data?

No. All hardware telemetry and input calculations run 100% locally in your browser using the native Gamepad API. No keystrokes, personal identifiers, or private information are transmitted or retained on our servers.

How does this test differ from standard button testers?

Standard button testers only show whether an input is pressed or unpressed. The Health Score Engine performs multi-dimensional quantitative analysis, calculating resting axis drift percentages, circular perimeter deviation, trigger pressure curves, and report timing consistency.

How this test works & its limits
  • This test reads your controller through the browser's standard Gamepad API — no drivers, no installs, nothing leaves your device.
  • Readings depend on connection mode: Bluetooth reports at lower rates than USB. Compare like-for-like (wired vs wired).
  • We measure the input reaching the browser — display lag and game-engine queues are outside this test's view.
  • A clean reading now does not guarantee no drift in-game: deadzones differ per game, and wear develops over time. Use the Drift Timeline to track yours.
  • This is a diagnostic, not a hardware-lab certification. For repair or RMA decisions, confirm with a second run or second tool.
