Why Controller Buttons Get Sticky
Button stickiness is almost always caused by dried sugary liquids, sweat, dead skin cells, and atmospheric dust accumulating in the 0.5mm clearance gap between the plastic button cap and the outer shell housing. This residue creates mechanical friction that overpowers the return spring force of the conductive rubber membrane.
External Cleaning with 90%+ Isopropyl Alcohol
Never use water, household window cleaners, or oil-based lubricants like WD-40 on a controller. Use 90% or higher Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), which dissolves sticky residue and evaporates rapidly without leaving conductive moisture behind.
Dip a cotton swab in IPA, dab off excess liquid so it is damp but not dripping, and scrub thoroughly around the perimeter of the stuck button while pressing it repeatedly in rapid succession. Allow 10 minutes to dry completely before powering on.

If external swabbing does not resolve the stickiness, the residue has seeped under the conductive silicone membrane.
