Controller Deadzone Explained
A deadzone is the region of stick travel a game ignores. Set correctly it hides sensor noise without slowing aim; set too high, everything feels mushy.
Inner vs outer deadzone
The inner deadzone covers the area around center. Its job is to ignore the stick's at-rest noise so you never drift — the exact offset the Stick Drift Detector measures. The outer deadzone covers the edges and stops you from reaching full deflection too early.
You want the smallest inner deadzone that fully covers your stick's measured at-rest noise: too low and you drift, too high and small aiming corrections do nothing.
Deadzone is not the response curve
The response curve maps stick distance to aim speed (linear, exponential, dynamic). The deadzone decides where the stick starts responding at all. They are tuned separately: deadzone first, then curve — games expose them as separate settings, and so do our per-game settings guides.
How to find your number
Run the Stick Drift Detector and note the at-rest offset on both sticks. Set the in-game deadzone at or just above that value, then test in-game: if you drift, raise it one step; if you feel spongy, lower it. Games use wildly different scales — Fortnite's is 0–50, Rocket League uses 0–1 floats — so the same percentage means different travel per game. What is the best deadzone for a controller?
The smallest value that fully covers your stick's at-rest noise — typically 0.5–1.5% on a healthy stick, or matching your measured drift percentage on a worn one. The community starting points in our settings guides are a good first guess; the detector gives you your exact number.
Do higher deadzones reduce stick drift?
They mask it: a deadzone above your stick's drift offset stops the game from reacting to it. The sensor still drifts and keeps wearing — cleaning or module replacement is the real fix.
